Greek Values

Fraternities and sororities, established early as 1776, are said to be founded on traditional American ideals such as: justice, honor, truth, and loyalty, love of wisdom, brotherly love, and unselfish service. As found within each organization's initiation ritual, adherence to such values was paramount. In fact, those who strayed from these values would face a peer judicial board. Today, as many of us are painfully aware, the values of our Greek "values based" organizations have been neglected.

For Greeks across the nation and at Washington University, treasuring the past.our founding principles and ethical theories, our early existence as literary and debating societies, and our self-governing methods used to manage relationships among frequently conflicting personalities and interests, is the only way in which Greeks will shape their future.

We encourage each of you as active members of the WU Greek community to stand up and embrace the values that your organizations were founded upon. Below is a link to the creed or mission statement of all 19 fraternities and sororities currently recognized at Washington University . We support you in your initiatives to challenge fellow members of the Greek community when they are potentially compromising the values of their organization.
