The Greek community at Wash U is comprised of 7 inter/national sororities, 12 inter/national fraternities and 9 city-wide NPHC Greek organizations that account for 30% of our student population. In addition to developing peer relationships, students who choose to commit to the Greek community will have opportunities to serve in leadership positions, participate in service programs, attend social events, and compete in team intramurals while maintaining the high academic standards found within each fraternity and sorority.
Being a member of a fraternity or sorority is an aspect of college irreplaceable by any other student organization. The history found within the national Greek organizations hosted by the University serves as the foundation for what generations of Washington University students have acclaimed "the ultimate college experience." The long-standing traditions, ritual, and founding values are the basis for brotherhood and sisterhood, leadership, involvement, responsibly citizenry, social interaction, and the pursuit of knowledge. While pursuing one's college degree, the opportunities for personal growth are limitless as each member creates his/her Greek undergraduate experience. What are these opportunities? Here's just a glimpse.
Relationships
Brotherhood and sisterhood are words that generate familiar images but are truly difficult to define. For each fraternity and sorority member, it means something different. The one commonality however, is that friendships built on fraternal bonds are life-long and forever cherished.
Leadership and Involvement
Greek organizations encourage their members to become actively involved not only on chapter executive boards, but also with in the Greek governing council, Student Union, Orientation, SAC, varsity sports, and other campus organizations. As you look around campus, you'll notice that the majority of student leaders are also members of our fraternities and sororities.
Academic and Personal Development
The Greek community requires their members to intentionally and successfully progress through his/her academic coursework. Each chapter supports the classroom experience by holding members accountable to specific academic standards, tutoring and mentoring members, and use of positive recognition programs as well. Because each chapter's national organization requires that chapters submit academic reports for EACH member, the Greek Life Office produces an analysis in the form of the Greek Scholarship Report every semester. Chapter grade point averages are incredibly high, with the all All-Greek GPA always rivaling and often exceeding the all student grade point average at WUSTL.
Service
Giving back to the larger community is a principle shared by all Greek organizations. Greek organizations sponsor a multitude of service events that either raise money for, or directly assist, agencies in need. Some events and agencies with which Greeks partner are Big Brothers of St. Louis, Operation Food Search, St. Louis Effort for AIDS, and Service First.
Social
Though students have numerous academic commitments, a large part of college life is having fun with fellow students. Mixers, formal dances, date parties, and theme parties are just a few of the social events which Greeks plan for their members. Having the time to unwind responsibly can be as important as spending that extra hour studying for an exam.
